The rules for determining your Medicare effective date have recently changed. Previously, if you applied for Medicare any time during the month in which you turn 65, your effective date would have been the first of the month in which you turned 65. Now, your effective date will be the first of the month following the date of application, no earlier than the first of the month in which you turn 65.
For example, if I am turning 65 in September 2023, I have three months before September (June, July, August), the month of September, and three months after (October, November, December) to sign up for Medicare. If I sign up June-August, my Medicare effective date would be September 1. If I sign up October-December, my effective date would be the first of the following month.
